MARQUETTE -- Students at Graveraet Alternative High School held a fundraiser.

The theme of the event was Graveraet:  past, present and future.  They were raising money to pay for maintenance and upkeep of their fountain and courtyard, plus an all school field trip.  The goal was to raise $5,000.

Alex Berdugo is a senior and says it's real important to get the community to support them.

"It would be really nice and we would really appreciate it for anyone to come out here, even if it's for 20 minutes. We would be really happy just to get the support," said Berdugo.

John Kivela, the Mayor of Marquette says with cuts to the school funds, that leaves schools looking for different ways to raise money.

"Education budgets being cut all the time, funding is scarce, and these are creative ways that people put their time in to raise money to do these things. It's important to keep the grounds beautiful here. Again, it's a beautiful, historic building," said Kivela.

At the event, people looked through old pictures, participated in a silent auction, and enjoyed refreshments.
