HOUGHTON -- Tech students are getting a crash course in self defense. The self-defense course is a part of a three-day event called Responsible Relationship Awareness.
Michigan Tech police officers taught participants different techniques like the correct way to punch and kick, which are all techniques that can be used to help fight off attackers.
“Anytime somebody becomes a victim, a lot of times they're chosen because of the way they hold themselves or the way they perceive themselves or the way the suspect will perceive them; so the big thing about teaching self defense is so that they can walk confidently, and they can approach situations confidently,” said Reid DeVoge, crime prevention officer for Michigan Tech Police.
Officials told the participants that it’s also very important to be aware of your surroundings.
