NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP -- Congratulations to the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter for winning an award on their no kill rate from the Michigan Pet Fund Alliance at the no-kill conference.
This is the third award the animal shelter has received for having a 96 percent no-kill rate. UPAWS focuses on finding loving homes for their strays instead of putting them down, but the shelter is not the only one getting awards for this.The community of Marquette County is now one of the 11 no-kill communities in Michigan.
"They support UPAWS, they support the animals and this community is just phenomenal. They are caring individuals that say these pets are important in our lives and they are important to our community and we want to see them placed in loving, caring homes," said UPAWS Manager Loreina Vansterien.
Since this is a community award, the plaque can be displayed at any local business for some time until a permanent location is found.
