A total of 333 runners raced through the rain Saturday.
It was the 18th annual Lake Superior Shore Run at Little Presque Isle. The Shore Run is meant to be a family-friendly race. The day included a half marathon, a 5K, and a 1K for kids. Racing routes were reportedly very challenging for some, and the rain didn't help, but everyone seemed to have fun. The event had more than 90 volunteers this year.
The run attracted people from all across the U.P. and even Wisconsin, Illinois, and Washington state.
"Yesterday it was like, okay we're all ready, let runners come, and so many people are showing up, so I'm feeling really good about it. I think a lot of people are happy to run," said Jenifer Kilpela, the race director.
Kjell-Christian Markset from Marquette, who took second last year, finished first overall in 1:19:05, winning the Half-Marathon race. Daniel Dehlin from Marquette took second place at 1:21:34, and Kyle Bratnud from Eden Prairie, Minnesota ran the course in 1:22:32, taking third place.
Marquette runner Lindsey Dehlin defended her 2011 title by coming back for a second victory on the Half-Marathon course, finishing in 1:45:03. The second and third place winners were close, with Liz Dirkse and Gala Malherbe five seconds apart to claim their podium spots, finishing in 1:49:20 and 1:49:25, respectively.
“I’ve been around this event for the last 10 years and this year tops them all,” said Dan Dehlin. “Packet pick-up was quick and easy. The race course was incredibly well marked. The aid station crews were great. The results were quick, and the awards ceremony was fast and efficient.”
In the 5k men’s race, Evan Fezatt of Negaunee claimed the top spot, coming in at 17:51. Blake Murray from Marquette took second at 18:00, with Joey Graci close behind in 18:26 for third place.
Mary Kate Cirelli from Marquette won the 5k women’s division in 18:00, followed by Jordyn Ross at 18:48 and Elizabeth Simak at 19:05 for second and third place.
