Sawyer International Airport receives bomb threat

SAWYER -- UPDATE: 9:50 p.m.

The State Police bomb squad is scheduled to arrive at Sawyer at 10:00 p.m.  The airport remains closed.  The evening flights at Sawyer were postponed until Saturday morning.  The American flight is scheduled to arrive at 9:00 a.m.  The Delta flights will arrive at 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.  It is recommended to check with the airlines to confirm the schedule.

The Marquette County Sheriff's Office believes all five bomb threats are connected.  A person of interest has been identified.

UPDATE: 7:50 p.m.

Marquette General Hospital activated its command center as a precaution.  The hospital supervisor says they're keeping tabs on the situation.  There has been no disruption in hospital services.   Northern Michigan University also continues to operate as usual.

UPDATE 6:37 p.m.

The Marquette County Sheriff's Department says they're investigating additional bomb threats made against Sawyer Medical Center, Marquette General Hospital and Northern Michigan University. Two suspicious packages have been located. One is at the Sawyer International Airport and the other was found at Sawyer Medical Center. A bomb squad from Gaylord, Mich. is on its way to assist in the investigations.

Earlier today a bomb threat caused an evacuation to North Star Academy in Marquette Township.

Marquette County officials report that a bomb threat was called in for Sawyer International Airport on Friday, with a detonation time of 2 p.m.

There was no explosion at 2 p.m. and police are awaiting the arrival the Michigan State Police bomb squad to arrive from Gaylord.

The Marquette County Sheriff's Department said that they are following a few tips regarding the bomb threat.

Officials at Sawyer say the airport will be shut down until further notice while authorities continue to check the airport.  The incoming Delta Airlines flights from Detroit have been cancelled Friday.

We will provide an update if more information comes in.
