MARQUETTE -- The Marquette Downtown Development Authority demonstrated its new electric car charging stations on Thursday morning.

A new Chevy Volt pulled into the Bluff Street parking ramp to plug in for a charge. The electric hybrid car gets more than 100 miles to the gallon when partnered with its electric power. The stations were part of a $1 million renovation to the parking ramp.

"The reduction in the use of fossil fuels is certainly a big benefit and so we're happy to be able to offer this to the community," said Mona Lang of the DDA.

The stations will provide a charge for the new eco-friendly vehicles free of charge for a trial period. The DDA is estimating that they will begin charging for the stations sometime after the first of the year.
