MARQUETTE -- A new exhibit at the Devos Art Museum at Northern Michigan University is shedding some light on a little known island in upper Michigan. Rabbit Island is the subject of an exhibit called "No Island is a Man."

It's the work of international artist Andrew Ranville who was born in Michigan. He spent a handful of months on the island located in Lake Superior off the coast of the Keweenaw Peninsula. His work explores how the uninhabited island has remained virtually untouched by man.

"I hope the local community especially can take away an appreciation for the landscape that they're close to all the time," said Visual Artist Andrew Ranville. "And I hope the students here at NMU can kind of take away some thoughts about how an artist can engage with the landscape using a variety of different mediums."

The work is the first for the Rabbit Island artist residency program. The island was purchased from Craigslist in 2011. New York doctor Rob Gorski bought the island for $140,000.

The project was helped by an on-line Kickstarter campaign. More information about the exhibit is available by clicking here.
