HUMBOLDT TOWNSHIP -- Rio Tinto updated the public on the Eagle Mine Project at Monday night's Humboldt Township informational meeting. Officials say drilling to reach the ore body is nearly complete. Work is still in progress to make the Humboldt Mill functional.
Residents questioned what impact the mine might have on the environment. Local government officials said they believe the company will be mindful of those concerns.
"We've certainly seen that they've already been good stewards to Humboldt Township--tens of millions of dollars worth of cleanup, they've also relocated their office facilities to Humboldt Township, 75 to 125 jobs," said Humboldt Township Supervisor Joe Derocha. "That's been a big benefit, and we've got new life brought to us."
The informational meetings continue with the next one at the Ramada in Marquette. That meeting is set for Monday, September 24 at 6 p.m.
