ESCANABA -- Escanaba Upper Elementary, formerly the Escanaba Junior High School, has a new playground and it's geared toward the younger students.

There was a school grade reconfiguration this year, and because of that, the Upper Elementary now has grades four, five, and six. Previously they had grades five, six and seven.

School officials have unveiled a new, larger playground because of this change. It includes fencing and new playground equipment.

"Right now we're still improving it a little bit," said Principal Steve Martin. "We've got another tire swing to put up yet, and we are putting in some trees to give it more of a park setting. And those trees are part of a grant."

A school official applied for a Plum Creek grant that made the new playground possible. The cost was more than $75,000 over three years to raise and spend that money for the playground.
