ESCANABA -- The third Upper Peninsula Honor Flight will be taking off from Delta County Airport on September 27, and officials recently received a $14,830 check from the Island Resort Charity Classic event back in August.

Organizers have raised almost $90,000 for this third flight, which will take 78 World War II veterans to see their memorials in Washington, D.C. The oldest vet is 100 years old and the youngest is 85.

This time around, there'll be four women veterans on the flight.

"Well, it's special because each group that we take, and all their stories are different," said U.P. Honor Flight volunteer Paula Waeghe. "And it's great to see the excitement on their faces and the way they enjoy the day."

The first honor flight was September of 2011 and the second was April of this year. There are plans to send veterans who are on a waiting list on a fourth honor flight next spring.
