MARQUETTE -- The 18th annual Lake Superior Shore Run is coming up this Saturday morning in Marquette. The race is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Superiorland Ski Club.
Proceeds benefit the organization's youth cross country ski programs. In 2011, 120 kids took part in Ski Cats, the Adventure Club, Prep Team and/or Race Team youth programs.
Saturday's Shore Run features a challenging half-marathon, a 5k run-walk and a 1k kids' race. Racing begins at 10 a.m. at Little Presque Isle. Prizes will be awarded to the top three overall male and female winners in each race and the top three male and female age group winners. The largest and fastest teams will receive $100 or prizes valued at $100, which could be gift certificates to local restaurants, according to race director, Jeni Kilpela.
"Teams are a great way to race because maybe you're feeling like 'I don't want to do this alone,' but if you know some of your coworkers or your friends are out there with you, it motivates you, because it's a tough course," said Kilpela.
New this year, run for a chance to win one of eight year-long memberships to CrossFit Marquette.
Volunteers can show up Saturday morning to help out along the course.
You can sign-up to race when you get to Little Presque Isle, but advanced registration is encouraged. Go to www.superiorlandskiclub.com to register.
