Fire at Escanaba apartment complex forces residents into the street
ESCANABA -- Residents of an Escanaba apartment complex are without a home this Saturday. That's due to a fire ripping through their building Friday night causing severe damage.
When Escanaba Public Safety Officials arrived on scene, they found the apartment building engulfed in flames.
Those living at 832 2nd Avenue South were forced to flee their homes for the streets just before 11 p.m., Friday. Officers say all the tenants in the building were able to escape without injury. Homes nearby were also evacuated as a safety precaution.
Escanaba Public Safety was assisted on the scene by the Ford River Township Fire Department.
The fire was able to be contained to the apartment complex, so nearby homes were saved. Firefighters were on the scene for over four hours.
The cause has not been determined and is under investigation.
The Michigan State Police, Delta County Sheriff's Department and Rampart Ambulance also assisted at the scene.
The Red Cross was called to help, providing shelter for the homeless tenants and refreshments for firefighters on the scene.
