MARQUETTE -- The Marquette Area Public School system is starting off the academic year by developing a new long-term plan for the future of the district.

The district will host a strategic planning meeting October 6 with selected members of the community, faculty, and members of the student body. Facilitating the meeting will be the Michigan Association of School Boards.

The district hopes strategic planning will help address various concerns facing the school that can be accomplished over three to five years.

"One thing we know for sure is going to be building configuration because we know we don't quite fit the footprint for the school district the way it is now, and what we need to look at, is there a different way for that to happen," said MAPS Superintendent Deborah Veight.

The public will have the opportunity to lend their input with upcoming informational sessions. The first session is September 18 at Bothwell Middle School starting at 6 p.m.
