NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP -- The Law Enforcement Torch Run, benefitting the Special Olympics, made its way through the central U.P. Tuesday.

The 28th annual, 750-ile event began Monday in Copper Harbor.  The journey is raising awareness for the Special Olympics in Michigan with the help of the Michigan State Police, Fraternal Order of Police, and the Michigan Department of Corrections.

As of Tuesday morning, the group was a couple minutes ahead of schedule, but they did lose one teammate due to injury.

"Right now, the first couple of days are easy.  Once we get to Wednesday and Thursday morning, when they're starting to build up on you instead of a five-mile leg every eight hours, we're doing six miles now," said Sergeant John of the Grosse Point Park Police Department.

A $10 donation can be made to the Michigan Special Olympics by texting the word "Torch" to 52000.

The week-long relay will end downstate in Sterling Heights.
