COPPER HARBOR -- The 28th annual 750-mile long Law Enforcement Torch Run got off to a great start in Copper Harbor on Monday morning, according to organizers.

The goal of the run is to raise awareness for the Special Olympics in Michigan with the help of the Michigan State Police, Fraternal Order of Police, and the Michigan Department of Corrections. With seven runners to a team, each person runs a five-mile stretch.

"First and foremost, all proceeds go to Special Olympics, so we help out the special Olympians throughout the United States and throughout the world," said Matthew Roznowski of the Michigan Department of Corrections. "The funding goes right to them, but also to let the community know that we're here sponsoring something that's so important."

The runners will make their way to Marquette by Tuesday. If you're interested in helping out in this event, a $10 donation can be made by texting the word TORCH to 52000. The week-long relay will end in Sterling Heights, Michigan.
