NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP -- With a hint of fall in the air, it was a perfect morning on Saturday for the 18th Annual Youth Day at the Negaunee Rod and Gun Club.

The day gave young people, 10 to 16 years old, a chance to experience shooting sports.  This is sponsored by the U.P. Whitetails of Marquette County.

There were 10 activities, from trap and skeet shooting, to archery and orienteering, and it was all free.

For the 95 youngsters who came out, they had a chance to try everything, moving around to the various stations.  They also got lunch, not to mention there were prizes, like rifles and a bow.

This event gets kids outside, experiencing the various sports, and learning how to shoot safely.

"They would never try, like, trap or skeet, a lot of kids never try that, but they get an opportunity to try that here, so we're trying to get kids involved in the outdoors, and this is a good way to do it," said Brian Reynolds, President of the U.P. Whitetails.

The Department of Natural Resources donor was also on hand talking about collaring moose in the wild. There was also a course on reloading shells and trapping.
