IRON MOUNTAIN -- Nearly 300 people came to Iron Mountain's City Park Saturday to honor those who have fallen victim to suicide. It was the 4th annual Dickinson County "Out of the Darkness" community walk.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention holds over 200 of these walks across the country.
The day started with food and fun for the whole family. The remembrance ceremony honored all loved ones who were lost to suicide with a bead jar, music, and a moment of silence. The ceremony also recognized military veterans who were suicide victims.
It all came with a message that suicide is completely preventable.
"I lost my brother almost 13 years ago to suicide, and it's a heartache like no other kind of loss," said Tina Tappy, an organizer. "We can prevent this from happening to other people. That was my goal in my own heart, to reach out to our community."
The one-mile walk was lead by the Michigan Patriot Guard Riders. It traveled around the park and parts of Hughitt and A Streets.
