MARQUETTE -- A group of quilters in Marquette are helping children from across the Upper Peninsula go through the grieving process. Camp STAR (Sharing Together and Remembering) at Bay Cliff Health Camp helps children who have recently suffered the loss of a loved one.
Twenty-two children from Camp STAR have brought in clothing items from their loved ones. The quilters are using the cloth to make teddy bears that will be given back to the children in late October.
"The reward that we get is knowing how much these bears are going to mean to those kids because quilting, in a sense, that's why we quilt and most of us give away the quilts we make," said Kathryn Norton, the owner of Alley Kats Quilt Shop. "Obviously, children who are suffering loss need comforting."
Other groups in the area are also helping out with the project. The Marquette County Quilters Guild and volunteers from St. Peter Cathedral are also making teddy bears. The bears will be given back to the children at the children's reunion on October 20.
