ESCANABA -- School is just around the corner, and Delta County Sheriff, Gary Ballweg, has some important tips for school bus safety, kids, parents, and motorists.
Students getting on the school bus should wait until the bus has come to a complete stop before you board. Always walk on the sidewalk when preparing to cross the street near a bus.
Motorists, remember, it's the law that you stop when the bus is displaying the red flashing lights. Not doing so is a misdemeanor and can get you a hefty fine. And parents, make sure your child knows your phone number, address, and a safe walking route.
"Parents should advise their children about dogs and houses to avoid. And that includes not talking to any strangers that they don't know. We don't have to have children paranoid that every stranger is out to hurt them," said Ballweg.
Sheriff Ballweg also says parents should plan a walking route, preferably with intersections that have crossing guards.
