MARQUETTE -- Students are back at Northern Michigan University as the fall semester began Monday morning.

The sunny weather might have made it a little difficult to head to school instead of the beach, but students we met were looking forward to the new year, especially activities outside of the classroom.

"I'm really excited about leading a couple student organizations I'm in, since I'm president of one and vice president of another," said junior Melissa Esser.

"I just joined the volunteer center, so we're doing a bunch of new volunteer events, and so I'm looking forward to coordinating and starting those," added junior Seth Kratz.

Students were also welcomed with Fall Fest outside in the school's academic mall. Many local businesses, student organizations, and volunteer agencies had booths with information and free giveaways.
