MARQUETTE -- Monday begins the fall semester at many universities across the U.P. Some of the new students starting Monday at Northern Michigan University are just a couple miles from home, but others have come from much longer distances.
Many new international students will be welcomed at NMU. Some are here to get a full degree, others for a year through an exchange program. David Vieira comes to Marquette from St. Martin, a small island in the Carribean. He plans to get a degree in Zoology. David is nervous and excited about a huge aspect of living in the U.P.
"Kinda worried about how winter's going to treat me, that's a a bit daunting," said Vieira.
"I do a lot of surfing back home and stuff like that, so I'm really stoked to try snowboarding and all that kind of stuff."
Vieira says Marquette and his native island feel similar because they are both close-knit communities.
