MARQUETTE -- Opening ceremonies got underway Sunday for the 2012 Ensign National Championship Regatta, and Marquette is the host city for the first time.

A total of 39 teams of four are competing at the sailboat races this year. Organizers are hoping to have around ten races completed by the end of Thursday. Each race is about four to six miles, upwind and downwind. Racers from four different nations, including Japan, are participating.

"This is really an honor and a responsibility bestowed on Marquette, but our sponsors and the citizens of Marquette have responded wonderfully," said Neil Lynch, the chairman of the Regatta.

The races kick off Monday morning at 10 a.m. and will end Thursday.
