SANDS TOWNSHIP -- The Marquette County Fair kicked off with the traditional livestock show Thursday morning.
Boys and girls from all around the county brought their livestock to be judged for the auction at the fair this Saturday. The judge examines the animal as well as the handler in the contest.
They started with the pigs then moved on to the steers and smaller animals. Each contestant spends months preparing their livestock.
"It's grueling for the kids because these are kids that are living on a farm. They've already got a ton of chores to do and they're up every morning. They're feeding the animals, they're watering the animals, and they're taking care of them," said Fair Board Member, Dennis Conery.
Owen DeVooght had the grand champion pig. Bethany Pierman had the reserve. Taylor Ehnis had the grand champion steer and Owen DeVooght won the reserve there as well.
Their animals will be the first to be sold at the auction at noon on Saturday.
