With over 600 people already signed up for the 2nd Annual Suicide Hill Mud Plunge scheduled for August 25, organizers say this year’s event is on track to break last year’s 750 participants.

“Not only are we looking at possibly breaking last year’s numbers, but we’ve added more obstacles and lengthened the course,” said Justine Marshall Henry, co-organizer of the event.  “This means we’re going to need more volunteers than last year.”

The event has made a few changes breaking up the 5k into two separate races, the A. Lindberg & Sons Competitive Run and the Bell Hospital Fun Run.  The CrossFit 906 Kids’ Run, a unique 1k course, is also being designed for kids 12 and under.

Volunteer opportunities include helping on the course at the obstacles, setting up, tearing down, registration, assisting at the start and finish lines, parking, and more.

“The entire mud plunge committee is so thankful for all of the support that we received from the community last year, we wouldn’t have been able to do it without them,” added Marshall Henry.

The 5k adventure runs through the trails at the Suicide Hill Ski Bowl between Ishpeming and Negaunee.  The course takes participants up rocky terrain, through mud pits, obstacles and ends with a spray down from the Ishpeming Fire Department.

The committee has been working essentially since the end of last year’s race and can’t wait to once again showcase the area and the great trails at the ski bowl.

“We’re happy to be bringing this event to the West End again,” said Marshall Henry.  “It really is a great community gathering--participants, volunteers and spectators are all part of a fantastic, muddy experience.”

If you’re interested in volunteering contact the Ishpeming-Negaunee Area Chamber of Commerce, ishpemingnegauneechamber@gmail.com or call (906) 486-1111.
