NEGAUNEE TWP. -- More than 200 visitors at the Michigan Iron Industry Museum in Negaunee Township took a trip back to the Civil War this weekend.
It was the annual Iron Ore and the Civil War event. Visitors to the museum were able to explore a typical military encampment during the Civil War. There were demonstrations on what it was like to cook during that time period and about the firearms they used. A young group called 'The Future Historians' also brought several games and toys that were common during the Civil War era.
The educators stayed overnight at the encampment since Friday night and mingled with museum-goers during the day.
"I hope they learn about what life was like in the Civil War for the soldiers and their encampments and also really highlighting Michigan's importance in the Civil War, not only for manpower, but for iron ore," said Troy Henderson, the museum's historian.
The multiple cannon demonstrations drew the biggest crowds throughout the weekend.
