LANSING -- Conservative GOP lawmakers in Lansing may be taking their time in setting up a health insurance exchange proposed by Governor Rick Snyder.
Snyder says he's giving House Republicans time to find out more about health insurance exchanges. The exchanges are required under the federal health care law upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in June. They're designed to allow customers to comparison shop online for insurance policies.
Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley weighs in on the issue.
"It is far more beneficial to have a state-based exchange than have a federal exchange," said Calley. "And so we want to be in a position to do that. There won't be any activation of an exchange ahead of time. This is something that we understand, the political dynamics being what they are, that the next political election could change things dramatically, but we want to be prepared either way."
The House committees have held hearings on what the federal health care law requires, but they have yet to vote on it.
