MARINETTE CO. -- Authorities in Marinette County are cracking down against drunk or impaired drivers.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice issued the grant in an effort to reduce the number of traffic crashes caused by impaired driving. A total of 12 county sheriff and Marinette police officers are out on the patrols in targeted areas throughout the county that are known for impaired driving.

"It's an ongoing problem," said Lt. Doug Erdmann of the Marinette Police Department. "Wisconsin has a culture of drinking, in fact we are the number one state in the country for drinking and driving, and we don't want to be number one anymore."

Operating While Intoxicated enforcement task forces have been set up throughout northeastern Wisconsin because of the grant. The program began in June and ends later this month.
