HUMBOLDT TOWNSHIP -- The Extremely Low Frequency, or ELF, site has been turned over to Humboldt Township.

The site opened up in the 1980s and served the Navy as a way to communicate with submarines around the world. The Navy vacated the building in 2005 and now the township has taken over. The facility still has showers, electricity and a host of technological equipment.

"We're hitting the ground running. We're really looking forward to it. We've been doing the groundwork on cleanup...when a building sits for seven years, it needs a little tlc, so we're currently in that phase right now so we're getting it up to speed," said Humboldt Township Supervisor Joe Derocha.

The township is still deciding how best to use the site. Options include a community center or disaster relief site. The township plans to have a grand opening ceremony on August 17. US Senator Carl Levin is scheduled to be there for the ribbon cutting.
