ESCANABA -- OSF St. Francis Hospital and Medical Group has recently received approval from the Center of Medicare and Medicaid to change to a critical access hospital. One part of this conversion includes more private patient rooms.
The change to this status provides additional financial resources to the care of all its patients. Jim Wayne, Chief Financial Officer for OSF, says it's a Medicare reimbursement program for payment to the hospital. The change will bring the community $4.5 million a year.
It'll make the hospital eligible for other programs that'll help them reduce their cost, specifically towards the purchase price for some of their out-patient drugs.
"OSF St. Francis Hospital will really be one of the larger critical access hospitals," said Wayne. "Many of those are quite a bit smaller and don't necessarily have the full line of services that we currently have and hope to expand in the future."
The changes will also allow the hospital to bring more specialists to this community.
