ESCANABA -- The weather started off cool, but as it warmed up, more and more people packed Ludington Street, which was blocked off for Escanaba's Sidewalk Daze.

The event was organized by the Escanaba Downtown Partners in Business group. Sue Parker, co-owner of Nyman Jewelers, served as group secretary. Her store display had a lot of close-out deals.

Officials blocked off roads as store deals and colorful displays attracted shoppers of all ages.

"I think it's a way to get people to come out downtown and see exactly what we have to offer," said Parker. "To just remind people that just because we don't have a roof over our heads, it's a great place to shop."

The event lasted from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., but on Saturday, there will be deep discounts from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Merchants are encouraged to lower prices even more and make Saturday a fun shopping experience for customers.
