LAURIUM -- As we head into the dog days of summer, some residents in the Keweenaw are kicking back and relaxing.

Saturday marked the second annual Lazy Days of Laurium. Hundreds of people turned out to the George Gipp Recreation Area for food and fun. The day-long event featured a Jack and Jill softball game, activities for the kids and musical performances later in the day.

Besides coming together to unwind, the community also pitched in to help raise money for projects in the area.

"Last year we raised money to fix up the village hall ballroom and this year we're raising money to fix up the baseball fields around here as well as the rest of the parts of the recreation area," said Loralee Miller, an organizer.

Organizers hope next year's event will span more than just one day.
