Former USOEC coach is headed to the Olympics

MARQUETTE -- Northern Michigan University's former United States Olympic Education Center's boxing coach Al Mitchell has been named to the 2012 USA Boxing Olympic Team staff.

The USOEC stated on Tuesday that Mitchell will be joining the team as a technical advisor. He was the technical advisor in 2004 and was the 1996 Olympic head coach.

"We have a young team, but they are looking," said Mitchell. "The world has caught up to the United States, and no one country will take all the medals."

Mitchell will be working with both men's and women's Olympic teams during the 2012 Olympics, which begin on July 27.

Accompanying Mitchell to the games is NMU and USOEC alumna Mikaela Mayer. Mayer will be serving as a training partner for Team USA.
