HANCOCK -- Jessica Makela is a recent high school grad who says if it wasn’t for the TRiO Upward Bound program, she wouldn’t have even considered going to college this fall.
“Upward Bound really opened my eyes to the college experience, and it taught me how to apply to scholarships, and they really pushed me to go,” said Makela.
The Upward Bound program has been a part of Finlandia University’s campus for the past 30 years. Its goal is to help students while they're in high school and then prepare them for college.
Upward Bound is geared towards students with an economic need.
“These students are the least likely to succeed in post-secondary education, so the government has created programs to help even the playing field for these students,” said Upward Bound program Director Joe Zerbst.
With 25 students from around the Copper Country, the six-week program gives the students a chance to live inside the dorms, and they spend time learning inside the classroom.
In the past 15 years, 78 percent of Upward Bound students attend college in the fall, and 26 percent of the students graduate college.
The program is funded by the U.S. Deparment of Education, and with the recent five year renewal of the program, Upward Bound says they will continue to help students prepare for their future.
