MARQUETTE -- Holiday celebrations in Marquette kicked off Wednesday morning with an activity for the whole family.

34 runners and walkers brought their canine companions to Picnic Rocks for the annual Dog Dash.

The dogs and their owners enjoyed a one or two and a half mile venture along the Lakeshore Boulevard bike path.

Money raised supports the 2,000 animals at the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter.

Shelter volunteer Lynn Andronis said, "The shelter is always strained during the summer months, so these events really help offset the care that it costs to take care of all of the animals."

Prizes were awarded for the fastest runners, as well as the dog with the best costume.
