CALUMET -- Two people rescued a kayaker in distress on Monday evening near Calumet, according to Michigan State Police.

State police received a call on Monday around 8:18 p.m. regarding a resident who heard a man calling for help.  The resident used his binoculars to spot the person in Lake Superior, about three quarters of a mile off shore, with a capsized kayak.

Police said the caller was able to signal a young woman traveling in another kayak, and directed her to the man in distress.  A second person who overheard what was happening used a row boat to reach the victim as well, according to officials.

The two people were able to help the man get back to shore, where he was treated by Mercy Ambulance.  The Coast Guard Station in Portage was en route to the scene, but they were called off prior to arrival.

The Michigan State Police credit the fast action and thinking of the three local residents for saving the man's life.
