NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP -- Early morning thunderstorms that swept through parts of the Upper Peninsula on Tuesday have left about 1,400 people without power, according to the Upper Peninsula Power Company.

The statement released by UPPCO says that 800 customers in Houghton and Baraga counties are without power, along with 600 customers in the Ishpeming and Gwinn areas.

High winds and lightning snapped several utility polls, according to the power company.  UPPCO expects to restore power to all customers by sometime Tuesday evening.
