MUNISING -- A Kentucky man is safe after being stranded on Grand Island by high winds and waves.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore rangers were alerted to a missing kayaker on Lake Superior around 4:20 Wednesday afternoon.  They found 58-year-old Craig Perdue on a small beach of Grand Island.  He had sought refuge there when high winds and waves became too much for him and the sea kayak he was paddling.

These same waves forced rescuers to anchor about 100 yards off shore and send in a rescue swimmer.  They then had Perdue paddle his kayak to their boat, assisting him as needed. He was then returned to shore.

The Alger County Sheriff's Department assisted in the rescue.
