HOUGHTON -- A 25-year-old Hancock man was sentenced for sexual assault in Houghton County Circuit Court.  The judge sentenced Matthew Norton to nine months in jail and five years probation.

Last month Norton was found guilty of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct for assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

"It could've been a lot uglier, and I do know this, and I've made a lot of mistakes in my past.  I have a lot of regrets. I do apologize for the things that have come forth up here and to the victim and the court," said Norton.

Norton received credit for 198 days, and based on his sentence, he must register as a sex offender.  The judge also informed Norton that he is not allowed to contact the victim of his crime.
