MARQUETTE -- This fall hunters will have the chance to hunt for antlerless deer in a little more territory.

A few select deer management units will open across the U.P., as well as downstate, come hunting season. The National Resources Commission made the decision Thursday in their monthly meeting. An increase in the deer population in certain areas is behind the opening of the units.

"It just gives an additional opportunity for hunters in the U.P.," said DRN spokeswoman Debbie Munson-Badini. "If they aren't concerned about necessarily getting their buck, but they just want to shoot a deer and get some venison, now they have another opportunity to go get a doe and not just a buck."

Deer management units in Drummond Island, as well as Bay de Noc, make up a the units in the U.P.
