LANSING (AP) -- The Michigan House has completed work on the upcoming budget, passing the spending package for public schools, community colleges and state universities.

The Senate is expected to take up the education bill on Tuesday. Once it passes, the $48 billion budget for the fiscal year that starts October 1 will go to Gov. Rick Snyder for his signature.

The House and Senate passed the non-education parts of the budget Thursday.

Lawmakers had hoped to finish budget chores Friday. But a dispute over higher education funding temporarily held up a deal on the university budget.

The House voted during an unusual Friday session to pass the education package. The Senate chose to put off a vote until Tuesday so senators could attend Friday's funeral for Grand Rapids Sen. Mark Jansen's son.
