MARQUETTE -- Petunia Pandemonium is Saturday morning in Marquette, but some students got a jumpstart on planting Friday.

Kids from Bothwell Middle School and North Star Academy lined US-41 Friday morning, digging holes and filling them with a variety of flowers.

This is the 24th year for the project that is organized by the Marquette Beautification and Restoration Committee. Nearly 2,600 flowers will be planted.

Friday's volunteer project ties in with the fifth grade science curriculum at Bothwell.

"Well, the world needs a little more plants, and it's good to make an ecosystem better and produce more oxygen," said Hope Kaukola.

More flowers will be planted along the highway Saturday morning starting at 10 a.m. Traffic will be reduced to one lane, and motorists are reminded to drive slowly past the volunteers.
