HOUGHTON -- The Copper Country Veterans Association is celebrating traditional Memorial Day at Houghton Veterans Park.

The association dedicated an Iraq War plaque, which is engraved with the names of two fallen soldiers from the area.  A recently restored, at ease, cannon brought in from Mount Pleasant, is also on display at the park.

The ceremony began with a prayer in remembrance of the soldiers lost in war and the ones still fighting.

"Today we are gathered here to honor all those who have made the final portage in their life for our freedom," said Ken McKay, V.P. of the Copper Vet Association.  "It's a remembrance day.  Freedom is not free and we should all understand that lives were paid for this freedom that we appreciate today."

The ceremony ended with a rifle salute.  If you didn't get a chance to attend the event, the plaque and cannon will permanently reside at Houghton Veterans Park.
