MARQUETTE COUNTY -- More details have been released concerning pending layoffs at the Empire Mine in Marquette County.

Around 245 employees will be impacted by the layoffs, which start June 3 and runs through October 15.

A Cliffs Natural Resources spokesperson says the layoffs are due to customer demand.  Officials are not releasing whether one of the Empire's partners is involved.  Under the current Cliffs plan, the Empire Mine is targeted to close in late 2014 or early 2015.

A Cliffs official says no plans have been made beyond that.  The layoffs starting Sunday will be based on seniority and job classifications.
