NEGAUNEE -- Thursday morning dozens of veterans from the VFW in Negaunee paid tribute to fellow veterans buried at the Negaunee City Cemetery.  Every year ahead of Memorial Day, members of the Negaunee VFW mark each gravesite where a service member has been buried.

The VFW says between 1,300 and 1,400 sites were marked Thursday for all service members recorded at the cemetery.  With the exception of Iraq and Afghanistan, the VFW says every military conflict is represented, dating all the way back to the Civil War.

"This piece of cloth is the most important piece of cloth that anyone in this country can own. It's a true honor to be here to do this," said Tom Stanaway of the Negaunee VFW.

Earlier in the week, the woman's auxiliary marked their members with a flag of their own.

The Negaunee VFW Military Parade on Memorial Day begins at 10 a.m.on Iron Street.
