STAMBAUGH -- West Iron County's Stambaugh Elementary School had their first 5k school celebration.  All 400 students from kindergarten through fifth grade participated in the event.

The school gathered at Nanaimo Park for their warm up with a Zumba instructor before hitting the trail.  The event is funded through a wellness grant aimed at boosting children's overall health. Physical Education teacher Jim Kralovee says this initiative is important.

"We feel it's very important to instill wellness at a young age so they could become lifelong learners and develop lifelong habits of good health," said Kralovee.

The first place students crossed the finish line in 22 minutes.  School officials say the 5k school celebration will become an annual event.
