MARQUETTE -- Sandy Knoll Elementary school students in Marquette got a hands on look at street safety Friday afternoon. Every student and their teachers went for a one hour walk, making their way down from the school, through Harlow park, then to the fit strip.
It's all to promote outdoor safety and keeping active in the summer months. Throughout the school year, the kids learn about safely crossing the street, not talking to strangers, and bike safety, and today they put it to use.
"We feel that this was a really important thing to do for the kids because the kids do spend a lot of time outside. We want to encourage the kids playing and having fun, walking, biking, all of those things," said Sandy Knoll Principal Kevin Hooper. "We want to ensure that it's done in a safe manner and that the kids have a lot of fun doing it."
School officials planned the outdoor day just in time for summer. The students get out on June 8.
