IRON MOUNTAIN -- On Wednesday, Iron Mountain families gathered at the Nordic Center in city park for more than just a fun day in the sun. They were there for Great Start's Starpower Potluck Picnic.

The organization helps families in providing a great start for children from birth to age five.  The Starpower event, held across Michigan, gathers signatures from families telling lawmakers our future depends on how well our children are prepared for tomorrow.

"There have been many studies done there, and they find that children who have received a preschool experience, not just Head Start, but any preschool experience, do better, especially up until the third grade," said Head Start Coordinator Linda Dale.

Linda says investing in children is critical to Michigan's future and should be an obligation of politicians.  Great Start hopes the signatures will spark lawmakers' support in early childhood development.
