MARQUETTE -- A group of pirates have anchored themselves at Northern Michigan University's Forest Roberts Theater in Marquette.
Fortunately the cast of NMU's "How I Became a Pirate" don't want to steal your treasure, instead they want to bring your family together.
"We've done a couple more serious shows throughout the year this year, and so we decided to take a break and have some fun with the kids," said actor James Porras.
Based on a children's book by the same name, How I Became a Pirate revolves around an ordinary boy setting sail with a group of pirates to learn how to become a swashbuckler himself.
The play has already received great reviews from students and teachers at Marquette area schools, who've attended special matinees this week.
"The public performances are an added bonus," explained Ansley Valentine, the show's director. "I think our main function, really, is to provide an opportunity for school children to see some quality theater, to see theater based on literature, and how that can tie into their learning."
The play has also been a learning experience for many of the cast members who had just over a week to rehearse.
"We all got along really well, and everybody has gotten into character really fast, and it's just been really amazing how quickly we've been able to adapt to these characters," Porras said.
How I Became a Pirate runs this week from Friday to Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with an additional matinee at 1 p.m. on May 19.
