BARAGA -- Friday started the two-day tribal mining forum at the Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College in Baraga.
This is the first-ever tribal mining forum hosted by the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. More than 50 people arrived for the forum. Some speakers came from local and regional tribes, while others came from government organizations like and the Department of the Interior.
Topics ranged from historical impacts on tribal natural resources to updates on the most current mining projects. The main purpose of the forum is to provide information to members of the community who may be concerned about mining projects in western U.P.
"We believe that an informed community will be more equipped and have more capacity for protecting the environment and participating in decision making processes regarding mining projects," said Jessica Koski, forum host organizer.
The tribal mining forum continues on Saturday at KBOCC, and registration is free.
