HOUGHTON -- If you're looking to buy a bike and you don't want to spend a lot of money, the Houghton Police Department might have what you're looking for. Over 50 unclaimed and abandoned bikes are up for auction. The bidding started Wednesday, and the bicycles are on display in front of the Houghton Fire Hall on Sharon Avenue.

All of the money made from the auction will go to the police department.

"We have a bike patrol here at the Houghton Police Department.  We're going to see how much money we raise from this and then we'll move those funds into the bike fund. If we can purchase a new bike, we will, and if not, then we will just purchase new equipment for the bikes," said Houghton City Chief of Police, John Donnelly.

You can place your bid at the fire hall or inside the police department. The auction will close Monday, May 14 at 8 a.m.

Once the winning bidders are announced, the bikes can be picked up on Wednesday, May 16, between the hours of 3 and 7 p.m.
